Choosing the EV charging station for you

There are three different types of electric vehicle chargers. The first is a Level I charger, which can provide three to five miles of range per hour. This type of charger utilizes alternating current (AC) power and plugs into any 110-volt outlet in your home or office, like the one you use for your phone or laptop. It typically takes eight to 20 hours to charge an electric vehicle with a Level I charger. These stations are usually only recommended for hybrid vehicles with small batteries.

The second type is the Level II charger, which can provide 30 miles of range per hour. This type of charger utilizes alternating current and can be either direct wired or cord connected to a 240 volt outlet. It typically takes four to five hours to fully charge an electric vehicle using a Level II charger. Level II chargers are the recommended EV charging station for residential systems.

The third type is the Level III charger, which can provide 50-112 miles of range per hour. This type of charger utilizes direct current power. It’s also known as a DC fast charger and requires a 480 volt to 1000 volt connection. Level III chargers are typically found at electric vehicle charging stations in public areas, where they are available for use by electric vehicle drivers. It takes about 20 minutes to fully charge an electric or hybrid electric vehicle with a Level III charger. However, this type of charging station is not suitable to have installed at your own home.
